Fantasy Novels

Isn’t it fascinating how a story so far from reality can teach us so much about dealing with our own reality?

I started this blog solely focused on self-improvement. Throughout 2023, I pretty much forbade myself from reading anything fictional. However, honestly, among all the self-development books, the ones that taught me the most about behavior, love, confidence, grief, and trust were all fantasy novels.

I. While the story might not be realistic, the characters are.

Sure, protecting castles, encountering dragons, and magic in our lives can be somewhat challenging. But in those extreme situations where the character is fighting for their lives, you learn what truly matters. Reading about impossible bargains, quests, and danger makes your ordinary problems seem insignificant. It makes you more aware of what truly matters, better than any self-help guru can.

II. It makes you see the magic.

As mentioned earlier, daydreaming about dragons and fairies might not be the best idea, but there is magic all around us—in the people we meet, the places we visit, and the animals we come across. They all carry their own magic, and fantasy novels make me more aware of them. Also, seeing someone literally go through the most horrific, terrifying stuff and come out alive is much more inspiring than a quote telling you to “just keep going.” Suddenly, you’re not as nervous making that phone call, talking to that person, or giving that presentation when your favorite character has just walked through hell.

III. Teaches human behavior.

When you read fantasy (or generally any novel), you encounter numerous people, character traits, friendships, and love stories. Every character you read about adds to your own personal growth and brings you closer to the person you want to be, the standards you want to set, and the people you surround yourself with. For me, I also learned a lot about confidence and pushing through.

I’m not saying you should never read self-improvement books. If you find one that catches your attention, then go for it. But don’t deprive yourself of the wisdom woven between magical castles, forbidden forests, and shimmering lakes. After all, those books were written by humans, and every human has wisdom to share and a story to tell.
